3 Reasons to Consider a Contract Role

Author: Katie Forsha

Calling all new grads!

With school coming to a close and summer approaching, now is the time to evaluate your options as you enter the workforce. While we know there are lots of career paths you can take, we want to let you in on a little secret: contract work might be the best move for you!

Why you should consider a contract role as a new grad:

1. You can ease your way into the workforce
“Where do you see yourself in 5 years”? Ah, the age old question that can be entirely unsettling as a new grad entering the workforce. We get it. Diving into the ‘adult world’ can be overwhelming, which is why a contract role is the perfect stepping stone into your career. Consider this a trial period to see what peaks your interest while gaining valuable skills along the way. You never know if you like something until you try it, so why not start with a contract role to test the waters?

2. You’ll beef up your resume
Chances are that if you’re a new grad, your resume is relatively simple (which is totally normal by the way). So, if you’re looking to get more experience in a short period of time, contract work is a great idea. You will be able to develop technical skills and build a network that will set you apart from other candidates down the line.

3. You can see if the company is a good fit
It’s no surprise that there is a only certain threshold of satisfaction that working at a company can bring you when the company culture doesn’t align with your values. These might be things like: flexibility, charitable mission/community involvement, work life balance, etc. Working as a contractor is an ideal way to learn what you value as an employee beyond your role and responsibilities to see if it matches up with what that company is offering. If it does, then you may want to make an effort to stay beyond your contract period.
