What Makes a Workplace Great?

Attraction, Retention, and Motivation

What workplace qualities do you think are important? Each year the NorthCoast 99 awards are given to local businesses and organizations for their ability to maintain great workplaces –defined as those that support the attraction, retention, and motivation of Top Performers.  But what are the characteristics that make a workplace great?

If you ask 10 people, you will probably receive 10 different opinions as each person has their own perspective. Here are some attributes we can probably all agree on:

Great Workplace

Mission or Vision

It is important that employees know where their organization is pointed and what they are working towards. A shared mission helps drive productivity and helps employees understand how their work connects to the big picture.

Career Growth and Total Compensation

Organizations should invest in training and career development so their employees can grow their talents and capabilities. They should also offer fair and competitive pay to help retain their skilled workforce. Offering flexible schedules, providing generous paid time off are great ways to retain top talent.

Environment

An environment that encourages and fosters people working together, communicating and sharing ideas to solve challenges has proven to provide better results, a better culture and workforce retention. Whether your workplace is energetic, creative or fun, it should create a quality experience for its employees.

Leadership

Great workplaces have approachable and inspiring leaders. They should support, value and respect their employees. Leaders should communicate openly about how the company is performing and share other information and updates with their employees.

Employee Appreciation

Workplaces that express appreciation of their employee’s contributions will experience better productivity and workplace engagement.

Give Back

Great workplaces give back to their communities by offering their resources and time to those in need.
