Tips to Ace Your Virtual Interview

Setting Yourself Up For Success

More and more companies are altering their recruiting efforts in the wake of the coronavirus, relying on video interviews in lieu of face-to-face interviews.  While the questions and conversations are likely to be the same, there are some differences between interviewing in-person versus through a screen – whethe it’s via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Hangouts, or another digital platform.  If you’re in the process of getting ready for a job interview on video, here are some best practices to get you set up for success.

  1. Check, double-check and triple-check your technology before the interview
  2. Prepare a well-lit, quiet, interview space free of clutter
  3. Close other programs on your computer/phone
  4. Dress as you would if you were going to the interview in person
  5. Use professional body language
  6. Make eye contact with your interviewer
  7. Be genuine and build rapport

Take time before your interview to do your research on the role and company  One of the benefits of virtual interviews is that you can have resources around you, so consider having a few large note cards at hand that highlight why you’re the right person for the job.

And be sure to ask the interviewer for a number in case the wifi goes out or you get disconnected.  Believe me, it happens.
