Job hunting during a pandemic can be a challenging process, to say the least, but that doesn’t mean it is impossible. If you are one of the many who have been displaced in the wake of coronavirus-related concerns, know that there are plenty of industries seeking talented workers for jobs providing stability and a steady income.

Below are some tips to help you navigate your job search during the COVID-19 pandemic and changing job market.

  1. Get Comfortable Online – The way companies recruit and hire has dramatically evolved over the past few months, with most interviews and onboarding now being conducted virtually. Get comfortable with the camera and ensure you are familiar with the popular programs being used such as Zoom, WebEx, and Google Hangouts. Log on in advance of your interview make sure the programs are installed and working properly and test out your video camera and microphone as well.
  2. Be Reliable – Even being a few seconds late to a phone or video interview can cost you a job. Make sure you test the links to video chats in advance and notify the employer if there is a problem. And as you would with an in-person interview, dial in 5-10 minutes early unless otherwise instructed.
  3. Stay Connected – Keep in touch with your personal and social networks. Ask for referrals from family, friends, and former co-workers.
  4. Update Your Social Presence – Make sure your social presence on all your social channels reflects you in the best light. According to a recent study by The Muse, 3 out of 4 hiring managers/recruiters check candidates’ social profiles.
  5. Brush Up on Your Skill Sets – There are numerous tools available for those looking to improve (both hard and soft) skills. The Cleveland Public Library offers several free resources to learn or enhance your skills. Another good resource for those looking to switch careers is CareerOneStop.org, a Department of Labor website that can evaluate your skills and connect you with training opportunities.
  6. Develop a 30-Second Elevator Pitch –Aim to summarize in 30 seconds who you are, your experience, what you are looking for and/or why you’d be a perfect candidate for an available position. Have your pitch ready to share with any daily interactions you may have, including friends, neighbors, local business owners, and prospective employers.
  7. Consider Freelance, Contract, and 1099 Opportunities – Temporary or contact positions help freshen up your resume, provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your abilities, and build up your skill set. They can also offer a lifeline if you are nearing a financial hardship.
